Learn Mongolian Calligraphy

Preserving UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage, the Erdenesiin Khuree Mongolian Calligraphy and Art Center offers a unique immersion into the world of Mongol Bichig (Traditional Mongolian Script). A fusion of movement, writing, and drawing, Mongolian calligraphy uses breath and gesture to create vertical strokes of ink on the page, forming a poetic art form. Working with Mongol bichig, you will explore breath control, body awareness, and movement. You’ll learn to begin, sustain, and release gestures, a practice that is both physical and spiritual, grounded in the present moment and embracing the art of letting go.

Course Objective

Regardless of your initial level (beginner or experienced), the curriculum adapts to immediately progress your calligraphy art and brushwork. Skill advancement is driven by regular assignments focused on mastering essential techniques

Standard or Intensive Couse Track

The Standard Track is ideal for students seeking a deeper, more reflective experience, offering 3 classes per week over 2, 4, 6, or 8 weeks. This paced structure allows for extensive practice time and cultural exploration in Kharkhorin. Conversely, the Intensive Course is designed for accelerated learning, packing 4 hours of instruction per day into compressed schedules ranging from 2 to 8 days. This track is perfect for travelers with limited time who wish to achieve significant progress quickly.

Core Course Structure

The course features a two-phase progression toward mastery:
1. Foundational Techniques: rigorous training in brush control, posture, and the essential strokes and for technical accuracy.

2. Artistic Expression, emphasizing composition, artistic flow, and the philosophical principles guiding the vertical script.

This structured practice inherently cultivates mindfulness and focus, connecting students to the traditional, healing art of contemplative brushwork.

Teachers' Expertise

All instruction is led by Master Calligraphers and their direct protégés. They possess decades of expertise in the UNESCO-recognized script. Students learn authentic brushwork and composition principles directly from those who dedicate their lives to preserving this ancient art, guaranteeing unmatched quality and cultural authenticity.

Materials & Tools

Authentic art instruments are provided on-site for all practice sessions. This includes the brush, paper, ink and other tools. We will also provide personalized recommendations for tools you can purchase for your own practice at home.

Certificate

Upon successful completion of the course requirements (which includes maintaining 80% attendance and submitting a final assignment), you will be awarded a formal Certificate of Completion from Erdenesiin Khuree, recognizing your mastery of the Mongolian Calligraphy.
