TAMIR SAMANDBADRAA PUREV
Mongolian Calligrapher
Born in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in 1976, Tamir Samandbadraa Purev, or simply Tamir, is a renowned international calligraphy master and a leading figure in contemporary Mongolian calligraphy. He is considered one of the pioneers of Mongolian calligraphy following the Democratic Revolution of the 1990s. His artworks have been displayed in exhibitions in France since 2004, and he was awarded as Mongolia's Best Calligrapher in 2006.
Having learned Mongolian calligraphy at a young age, nurtured by his grandmother's teachings of Mongolian script and Buddhism, Tamir's artistic career preceded with studies in aviation in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, and cinematography in Ulan Bator, Mongolia. In the late 1990s, Tamir returned to his calligraphic roots, studying under the esteemed master Battumur.
Tamir believes a calligrapher is, at heart, a philosopher, and his art reflects this profound connection. His work transcends mere aesthetics, conveying a sense of meditative tranquility and cultural richness. He creates in a state similar to a trance, dwelling in the moment and resulting in spontaneous pieces without any sketches or pre-designs.
Tamir's fluency in French, English, Russian, and Mongolian reflects his commitment to international collaboration. He divides his time between Kharkhorin, Mongolia, and various countries, showcasing his artwork and teaching creative techniques to a diverse audience worldwide. He is also one of the first Mongolian calligraphers to work with porcelain and ceramic, including blue-white porcelain from Jingdezhen, China.
In 2018, Tamir initiated the foundation of Erdenesiin Khuree, a non-governmental organization dedicated to preserving, promoting, and developing Mongolian calligraphy art and nurturing future generations of calligraphers. This initiative aims to ensure the continued evolution of this unique art form.
